Product Analysis
Aveeno has a special ingredient in Avena Sativa (Oats) which is generally not found in other products. The ingredient itself is generally safe according to reports. If you have an allergy to oats, then you should avoid using any Aveeno products.
Benzyl Alcohol
Aveeno Eczema Therapy Itch Relief Balm has a common ingredient across many moisturizing lotions called Benzyl Alcohol. It is an ingredient used in skin lotions due its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is quite common in moisturizing creams for Eczema.
Now here is the problem with Benzyl Alcohol. It has the safety hazard of being harmful in contact with skin. It also has potential health concerns for those with Dermatitis (Eczema). We should approach any products with Benzyl Alcohol with caution. It is an irritant, which can be linked to the burning sensation cases when applying the lotion.
Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide is used in many industries such as soap and detergents. It is frequently used as a cleaning agent where it often called ‘caustic’. A sodium hydroxide soak solution is used as a powerful degreaser on stainless steal and glass bake ware. It also functions as a antiseptic, preventing growth of unwated microorganisms.
With the multiple functions of sodium hydroxide, it comes with a few safety hazards and potential health concerns. It can cause severe skin burns and eye damage along with serious eye damage and irritation. This ingredient must be noted for Eczema users, as it is certainly not one that is ‘safe’.
Citric Acid
An ingredient that is not regarded as harmful, but should be noted is Citric Acid. It has many functions, notably as an exfoliant that removes dead cells at the surface of the skin and as a skin whitening agent by reducing the melanin content of the skin.
Despite the multiple benefits of using Citric Acid, it has many safety hazards and potential health concerns for Eczema users. It can cause skin irritation and allergic skin reactions.
Should I use Aveeno Eczema Therapy Itch Relief Balm?
Despite Aveeno being one of the giants in the skin care industry, this product has two alarming ingredients. I personally have used and avoided this product as I had a burning sensation, one that comes with Benzyl Alcohol.
If you have a sensitivity to oats, this is definitely a product to avoid. Consult a doctor or dermatologist if you want to get a better insight of this product.
